ATLANTA (AP) - Eli Lilly and Co. is looking to increase its total sales of the antipsychotic medication lisurin by 20 percent this year and by 30 percent in 2015, the Indianapolis Star reports. Lisurin, the brand-name version of Eli Lilly's drug schizophrenia, is expected to earn more than $100 million in annual sales in 2015. "Lisurin is the most well-known product in the world. We expect the total volume of sales will be the highest we have seen in years," said Andrew B. Smith, Lilly's chairman and chief executive officer.
The Indianapolis Star report also cites a report from a "very small" group of analysts who have seen the company's revenue decline since its January 2007 purchase of Eli Lilly & Co. by Pfizer. The study estimated that Lilly's total sales would be $3.9 billion in 2015. The analysts cited no substantial growth in the company's total sales since its January 2007 acquisition by Pfizer. Lisurin was the third-best seller and the fifth-best-selling product in the country.
Lilly's sales of schizophrenia have fallen to $1.1 billion in the third quarter of this year, according to the company's financial data. In the quarter, sales of schizophrenia drugs totaled $4.3 billion, down from $3.9 billion in the year-ago period. Sales of the top-selling drug for the year were $8.9 billion, down from $8.1 billion in the same period. Sales of the most-selling drug for the year were $5.5 billion, down from $4.7 billion in the same period. Sales of the antipsychotic drug risperidone totaled $2.7 billion in the third quarter of this year, compared to $2.1 billion in the same period of the year-ago period. Sales of generic versions of the top-selling drugs for the year were $1.3 billion in the third quarter of this year.
Lilly expects full sales growth in 2015, but said that its full-year sales growth will be at a slower pace than expected. "The company expects full sales growth in 2015, but we believe this will be at a slower pace than we expect." Smith said Lilly expects full-year sales growth of about $1.5 billion in 2015. Smith, who was the Lilly chairman from July 1, 2009 to July 31, 2012, also reiterated his forecast for full-year sales growth of about $1.3 billion in 2015.
