Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders in the United States. The global prevalence of ADHD is estimated to reach approximately 20% to 30% by the year 2027. The symptoms of ADHD can be broadly classified into four main groups: hyperactivity (high, idgeting, hyperactive-impulsive), irritability, and impulsivity. In the United States, the total prevalence of ADHD in children aged 8–17 years is estimated to be 2.2% (2027).
The primary symptoms of ADHD are hyperactivity (high, idgeting, hyperactive-impulsivity) and irritability (high, irritability), with symptoms increasing in the first years of life. ADHD is classified as a disorder with a significant impact on daily life, including academic, social, and occupational functioning. The most common types of ADHD are the heterogeneous nature of ADHD and its symptoms, such as inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, hyperactivity, impulsivity-related problems, and hyperactivity and impulsivity-related symptoms.
The symptoms of ADHD can be broadly classified into four main types based on the underlying cause and severity of ADHD. The first two types of ADHD include inattentive-impulsivity (AIMS), hyperactive-impulsivity-hyperactivity (HIMPA), and hyperactive-impulsivity-related symptoms (ADHD-related symptoms). The fifth type of ADHD includes hyperactivity and impulsivity-related inattentive symptoms (HSSS). Both of these types of symptoms have a significant impact on daily functioning, academic performance, and academic outcomes. Hyperactivity and impulsivity are the two most common types of ADHD.
The prevalence of hyperactivity and impulsivity in children with ADHD varies considerably. For example, the prevalence of hyperactivity in children aged 7–16 years ranges from 2.2% to 11.7% (2027) (see Table 1).
Table 1
Differences of Hyperactivity and Risks
For adults with ADHD, the risk of ADHD-related side effects increases with age. The risk of AIMS in adults increases with age from a mean of 4.6% for children aged 8–17 years to 16.8% for children aged 10–14 years (2027) (Table 2). The increase in risk of AIMS in children aged 7–16 years was observed in patients diagnosed with ADHD in a large population-based study conducted in 2013 (2027).
The risk of AIMS increases with age from a mean of 4.6% for children aged 8–17 years to 8.3% for children aged 10–14 years (2027) (Table 3).
For children aged 7–16 years, the risk of hyperactivity and inattention increases with age, from a mean of 8.3% for children aged 7–16 years to 12.1% for children aged 10–14 years (2027) (see Table 4).
For children aged 10–14 years, the risk of ADHD-related symptoms increases with age, from a mean of 6.4% for children aged 10–14 years to 5.8% for children aged 15–17 years (2027) (Table 4).
In the U. S., ADHD-related symptoms are the most common types of symptoms of ADHD, with hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity as the most common type (Table 5).

Risk Factors for ADHD
There are several risk factors for hyperactivity and impulsivity, which can be grouped into the following categories:
The risk of ADHD-related symptoms increases with age from a mean of 7.2% for children aged 7–16 years to 16.8% for children aged 10–14 years (2027) (see Table 6).
